The Dover Council on
Aging was established by the town in 1976, pursuant to Chapter 40, section 8B,
of the Massachusetts General Laws. The charge of the council is to assist Dover
seniors (age 60 and over) in leading healthy and effective lives. Other responsibilities
of the Council include, but are not limited to: enlisting support and services
to fill needs, or providing assistance in coordinating existing services; working
with federal, state and local organizations/agencies to enhance programs/services
to seniors; serving as a resource to residents of all ages for information about
senior issues.

Bright Horizons, our
monthly newsletter is mailed to every Dover resident age 65 and over. More detailed
information can be found each month in this newsletter.
Special Events:
- A MONTHLY LUNCHEON
is held with either entertainment or educational activity following, although
sometimes it is purely social!
- MONTHLY HEALTH &
WELLNESS PRESENTATIONS- usually held the 4th Thursday of the
month. Topics have included Osteoporosis, Glaucoma and other related eye
problems.
Programs & Services
- BLOOD PRESSURE CLINIC
– The Walpole Area Visiting Nurse Association sponsors a monthly clinic
on the 4th Friday of the month at 1PM.
- FOOT CLINIC – held
bi-monthly on 1st Thursday of the month from 9-12.
- SHINE – Serving
Health Information Needs of Elders is a free
health insurance counseling program for seniors and Medicare beneficiaries.
Call the COA office for appointment. Davis Greene, Dover’s SHINE Counselor,
is available Monday and Wednesday mornings.
- WALKING CLUB- The
Charles River Walking Club meets twice a month at area parks and lakes for
group walks.
- CRAFTS CLASS-
offered the second and fourth Mondays of the month at 10AM. The cost is
minimal and there are usually tasty treat after the class!
- BASIC ART CLASS
– offered the first and third Thursdays of the month at 10AM. The only prerequisite
for this class is interest!
- Bridge & Cribbage
– held the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 1-4PM.
- STRENGTH/FITNESS/EXERCISE
CLASS- this class is held every Tuesday and Friday mornings at 10AM. Men
and women are welcome to attend this class and to bring a friend. A contribution
of $2.00 is suggested to help defray the expenses for the Tuesday class.
The Friday class is $3.00. Come and see for yourself how fun exercise can
be!
- COMPUTER BASICS
– the COA offers one-on-one computer trainings on the basics including the
Internet, e-mail and navigating different programs.
- ENERGY ASSISTANCE
PROGRAM – if you need help with fuel bills this winter, you may qualify
for this program which provides help to low income elders in paying their
fuel bills during the winter months. Call the COA for more information.
- MEDICAL EQUIPMENT
LOAN PROGRAM – the COA has a growing supply of medical equipment that is
available for ANY Dover citizen for a short-term basis.
- THE RIDE – The MBTA’s
paratransit service, THE RIDE, provides advance notice door-to-door transportation
to those who because of a mental, physical or sensory disability, are unable
to use general public transportation. This service is available in Dover
to those who qualify. Please call the COA for more information or to request
an application.
Volunteers
The Dover Council on
Aging has many volunteers that assist with various activities. Anyone interested
in volunteering can call the COA office.
- The COA is always
looking for people with professional of life experience that could assist
the Council on Aging. If you have spare time and feel you can contribute to
the COA, we would love to hear from you. Please call the COA office and let
us know what you have in mind. If you have time, but are unsure of what you
could do, let us know that as well. We would like a volunteer program where
everyone can help.
- The COA is looking
for someone with some computer knowledge that can assist people that sign
up for the COA computer. (Helping start and shut down PC, as well as answer
any questions along the way.) If you have basic computer knowledge and some
free time, please call us.
- FISH Volunteers needed:
(Friends in Service Helping) volunteers are needed to give rides to fellow
Dover residents who are unable to get out on their own to various appointments.
Once put on the list, you can agree to giving a ride based on your own availability
when called, it’s as simple as that!
- The COA is looking
for "handy-men" who will be available on an on-call basis to perform small
odd-jobs around the house for fellow Dover residents that need assistance.
Please call the COA office if you have the time and are interested in helping
out.
